History of CIE Hong Kong

Establishment of the Society

During 1995-96, a group of patriotic Hong Kong professional engineers and scholars participated in an exchange visit to Beijing. During the trip, they met with the leadership of the Chinese Institute of Electronics (CIE), including then President Sun Junren, Professor Sha Zong, and other senior leaders.

Against the backdrop of Hong Kong's impending return to the motherland, they shared a common aspiration:

"Hong Kong is about to return to the embrace of the motherland; in our own place, we should also have our own electronics society."

This vision became the origin of the Hong Kong Institute of Electronics (CIE Hong Kong). In the period leading up to Hong Kong's return, these engineers and scholars traveled frequently between Beijing and Hong Kong to lay the groundwork for establishing the society. Guided by the visionary leadership of the Chinese Institute of Electronics, they successfully founded the Hong Kong Institute of Electronics (CIE Hong Kong).

As our founding chairman, Professor Poon, once remarked:

"Without the leadership of President Sun Junren, the Hong Kong Institute of Electronics (CIE Hong Kong) would not exist."

The society was established in Shenzhen in early 1997 and was officially approved and registered under the Societies Ordinance of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region in February 1998. Its inaugural ceremony was held on March 6, 1998, in the Fung Shui Room of the Marco Polo Hongkong Hotel.

To mark this important occasion, Professor Sha Zong, then Vice President of the Chinese Institute of Electronics, was invited to officiate the ceremony and deliver a speech on behalf of the Council.
